PRESS RELEASE
Lugano, 5 July 2012
Official inauguration of the Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Croatia for Ticino
The new premises of the Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Croatia for Ticino in Lugano were inaugurated today in the presence of His Excellency Jakša Muljačic, Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia in Switzerland.
Croatia was part of Yugoslavia until 1991.
Previously, from 1102 it was united to the Kingdom of Hungary.
It is currently member of the NATO and became member of the European Union on 1.7.2013.
Over the next few years, significant economic growth is expected, not only in the touristic sector.
Some commercial enterprises (many of which are Swiss), benefited from the Croatian market liberalization. The increase of international investments leads to the expectation of a strong growth in industrial production and the tertiary sector.
The Croatian population amounts to about 4.5 million inhabitants. Over 2 million reside abroad, of which about 60’000 live in Switzerland and over 5’000 in Ticino.
The newly appointed honorary Consul for Ticino will focus on institutional, political and economic issues.
The General Consulate of Bern, present in Lugano on the second and fourth Monday each month in the premises of Hotel Pestalozzi, will still handle current and administrative affairs.
Atty. Giorgio Grandini
Honorary Consul
